I go through phases when I get sick of my iPod selection despite there being over 3000 songs on it and I go in search of new stuff. New to me that is. This happened recently and here are some of the vibes I’ve started to dig.
1. Ron Sexsmith – Although he’s an established artist and he was already on my iPod, I recently saw a documentary on him on HBO so I had another listen from a different perspective. I don’t think an opera coach will ever tell you he has the best voice ever but he has an interesting sound to my ears. He’s also very poetic. Very poetic. Here’s one of his tunes that I love the lyrics on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OA6-DoEcnK0
2. Adele – I thought her last album, 19, was just ok and she had a sort of Macy Gray sound going on. I think her and her peeps (management, producers, etc) really nailed this last album called 21. It’s evidenced by her skyrocketing album sales which proves that people still buy music if it’s good. I think she’s outselling Gaga’s latest coaster. If you don’t know who Adele is by now, congratulations...you’re the last person on the planet who doesn’t know about her. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYEDA3JcQqw
3. Bon Iver – My cousin Daniela recommended I check Bon Iver out. She’s a music-soul if there ever was one, so her recommendations usually make it to the top of my "must check out" lists. There was a big hullabaloo recently with their most recent release because iTunes released it like, weeks early or something – a disaster in the music industry. I didn’t follow-up on if they sued iTunes or anything because I don’t really care but if anything if gave them big press. I dig ‘em...here’s one from the early-release-iTunes fiasco http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2kvRU3iEjA&feature=related
4. Leila Broussard – This gal’s a little different artistically and marketingly (I just made that word up, thank you) which I like. I can’t remember how I first heard of Leila but if you sign-up for her email list she keeps sending you free singles. I like that she’s not quite in tune at the beginning of this song which could have been corrected with technology. Personally, I would have fixed it on my vocal but I admire those who can say “meh, just leave it”. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVQhomWEuyM&feature=player_embedded
5. Viv Peyrat – I can’t remember where I discovered this dude either. Good writer and I really love his voice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcnT11wQ_hA
Long story short, I’m now getting tired of my Ron, Adele, Bon Ivor, Leila, and Viv collection so please lend me your ears and fire me off an email to
